Overview
Listril 10 contains lisinopril, an ACE inhibitor used to lower blood pressure and reduce strain on the heart. Depending on the patient's condition, it may be prescribed for hypertension, as part of heart-failure treatment or after an acute heart attack. Ongoing blood-pressure, kidney-function and potassium monitoring may be required.
What it is used for
Treatment of hypertension; adjunctive treatment of heart failure; and treatment of selected haemodynamically stable patients after acute myocardial infarction. The indication and target dose are decided by the treating clinician.
How it works
Lisinopril reduces formation of angiotensin II, a substance that narrows blood vessels and stimulates aldosterone. Blood vessels relax, blood pressure falls and the heart can pump against less resistance.
How to take it
Take once or otherwise exactly as prescribed, at a consistent time, with or without food. Continue even when feeling well because high blood pressure often has no symptoms. Do not change the dose or stop without advice. Avoid dehydration and follow instructions regarding blood tests and blood-pressure checks.
Common side effects
Dry persistent cough, dizziness, headache, tiredness, low blood pressure, nausea and increased potassium may occur. Kidney-function test changes can also occur.
When to seek urgent medical help
Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue, face or throat, breathing difficulty, fainting or severe allergic reaction. Contact the clinician promptly for very low urine output, marked weakness, irregular heartbeat or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Warnings and precautions
Lisinopril can harm an unborn baby and must be stopped promptly under medical direction if pregnancy occurs. Tell the clinician about prior ACE-inhibitor angioedema, kidney disease, renal-artery narrowing, high potassium, dialysis, dehydration, diabetes or planned surgery.
Interactions
Potassium supplements, potassium-containing salt substitutes, potassium-sparing diuretics, NSAIDs, lithium, other blood-pressure medicines, aliskiren and sacubitril/valsartan require careful review. Certain combinations are contraindicated or need separation.
Missed dose
Follow the patient leaflet or prescriber's instructions. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, do not take a double dose to compensate. Ask a pharmacist or prescriber if unsure.
Storage
Keep in the original pack at room temperature, protected from moisture and excessive heat, and away from children.
