Overview

Acamptas 333 mg contains acamprosate calcium, a medicine used to help maintain abstinence in adults with alcohol dependence who have already stopped drinking. It is intended to support recovery together with counselling, behavioural therapy and other psychosocial care. It does not treat acute alcohol withdrawal, intoxication or the harmful effects of continued alcohol use.

What it is used for

Maintenance of abstinence from alcohol after withdrawal and detoxification, as part of a comprehensive treatment programme. Benefit is greatest when treatment is combined with ongoing counselling and support.

How it works

Acamprosate is thought to help stabilise excitatory and inhibitory signalling in the brain that becomes disrupted by long-term alcohol exposure. Its precise mechanism is not fully established, and it is not an opioid, sedative or alcohol-deterrent medicine.

How to take it

Use only in the dose and schedule prescribed. Swallow delayed-release tablets whole; do not crush or chew them. They may be taken with or without food, but a consistent routine helps adherence. Continue counselling and contact the prescriber if drinking resumes rather than stopping treatment independently.

Common side effects

Diarrhoea is the most commonly reported effect. Abdominal discomfort, nausea, gas, itching, headache, sleep disturbance, anxiety or reduced appetite may also occur.

When to seek urgent medical help

Seek prompt help for severe allergic reaction, persistent or severe diarrhoea, major mood changes, depression, suicidal thoughts or unusual behaviour.

Warnings and precautions

Tell the prescriber about kidney disease, depression, suicidal thoughts, pregnancy, planned pregnancy or breastfeeding. Dose reduction is required in moderate renal impairment, and acamprosate is contraindicated in severe renal impairment. It should not be relied upon to manage withdrawal symptoms.

Interactions

Give the clinician a complete list of prescription medicines, non-prescription products and supplements. Although clinically important metabolic interactions are relatively uncommon, kidney function and the complete treatment plan must be reviewed.

Missed dose

Follow the patient leaflet or prescriber's instructions. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, do not take a double dose to compensate. Ask a pharmacist or prescriber if unsure.
