Overview

Augmentin 625 Duo combines amoxicillin with clavulanic acid. It is a prescription antibiotic used for susceptible bacterial infections when this combination is clinically appropriate. It does not treat colds, influenza or other viral infections. Unnecessary or incomplete antibiotic use contributes to antimicrobial resistance.

What it is used for

Depending on the diagnosis and local susceptibility patterns, clinicians may prescribe this combination for bacterial infections involving the sinuses, ears, respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin and soft tissue, teeth, bones or joints. Culture results and patient history guide appropriate use.

How it works

Amoxicillin interferes with formation of the bacterial cell wall. Clavulanic acid blocks certain beta-lactamase enzymes that can inactivate amoxicillin, extending activity against susceptible beta-lactamase-producing bacteria.

How to take it

Take exactly as prescribed, commonly at the start of a meal to improve tolerance and absorption. Space doses evenly and complete the prescribed course unless a clinician tells you to stop. Do not share antibiotics or save leftover tablets for another illness.

Common side effects

Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, abdominal discomfort, headache, skin rash and oral or vaginal thrush may occur.

When to seek urgent medical help

Stop and obtain urgent care for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, widespread blistering rash, severe or persistent diarrhoea, bloody stool, seizures, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or marked abdominal pain.

Warnings and precautions

Do not use with a known serious allergy to penicillins or related beta-lactam antibiotics. Tell the clinician about previous jaundice or liver injury linked to amoxicillin/clavulanate, kidney or liver disease, glandular fever, pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Interactions

Important interactions may involve warfarin or other anticoagulants, methotrexate, probenecid, mycophenolate and allopurinol. Provide a complete medicine list. Severe diarrhoea or vomiting can reduce reliability of oral contraceptive pills; follow the pill leaflet and seek advice.

Missed dose

Follow the patient leaflet or prescriber's instructions. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, do not take a double dose to compensate. Ask a pharmacist or prescriber if unsure.

Storage

Keep in the original pack, protected from moisture and heat, and out of children's reach. Observe the storage instructions and expiry date on the specific marketed pack.
