Overview

Cefoprox CV 325 is a prescription antibacterial combination containing cefpodoxime proxetil and clavulanic acid. It is used only for bacterial infections judged susceptible to the combination. It has no role in viral colds or influenza, and inappropriate use can promote antibiotic resistance.

What it is used for

A clinician may use this combination for selected bacterial infections of the upper or lower respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin or soft tissue. The diagnosis, culture information, local resistance patterns and kidney function determine whether it is suitable.

How it works

Cefpodoxime is a third-generation cephalosporin that disrupts bacterial cell-wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid inhibits certain beta-lactamase enzymes, helping protect the antibacterial component from enzymatic breakdown in susceptible organisms.

How to take it

Use exactly as prescribed and complete the directed course. Cefpodoxime tablets are generally taken with food to improve absorption; follow the specific pack leaflet. Keep doses evenly spaced and do not share leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects

Diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, indigestion, headache, dizziness, rash and oral or vaginal thrush may occur.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, a blistering or peeling rash, severe or bloody diarrhoea, seizures, jaundice, unusual bruising or a major reduction in urine output.

Warnings and precautions

Tell the prescriber about allergy to cephalosporins, penicillins or other beta-lactams; previous antibiotic-associated colitis; and kidney or liver disease. Dose adjustment may be needed with reduced kidney function. Pregnancy and breastfeeding require clinical review.

Interactions

Antacids and acid-suppressing medicines may affect cefpodoxime absorption; follow spacing advice from the clinician. Probenecid and anticoagulants may also be relevant. Give the prescriber a complete list of medicines and supplements.

Missed dose
