Overview

Eltroxin 25 micrograms contains levothyroxine, a synthetic form of thyroxine (T4), the principal hormone produced by the thyroid gland. It replaces deficient thyroid hormone in hypothyroidism. The dose is individualised using symptoms, age, heart health and thyroid-function blood tests.

What it is used for

Replacement treatment for hypothyroidism and, in selected specialist situations, suppression of thyroid-stimulating hormone. It is not a weight-loss medicine and must not be used for obesity in people with normal thyroid function.

How it works

Levothyroxine supplies T4, which tissues convert partly to the active hormone T3. Thyroid hormones regulate metabolism and are important for cardiovascular, nervous-system, digestive, muscle, bone and developmental function.

How to take it

Take exactly as prescribed, consistently in relation to food. It is commonly taken on an empty stomach 30–60 minutes before breakfast with water, or at another consistently separated time directed by the clinician. Swallow with water and do not change brand or timing without advice, as absorption can vary.

Common side effects

Correct replacement often causes no side effects. Excess dosing can produce symptoms resembling an overactive thyroid: palpitations, fast heartbeat, tremor, nervousness, sweating, heat intolerance, diarrhoea, insomnia, headache, muscle weakness or weight loss.

When to seek urgent medical help

Seek prompt care for chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, seizure or serious allergic reaction.

Warnings and precautions

Tell the clinician about heart disease, rhythm problems, diabetes, adrenal or pituitary disease, osteoporosis, pregnancy and all recent thyroid results. Untreated adrenal insufficiency must be corrected first. Regular TSH and sometimes free-T4 monitoring guides dose changes.

Interactions

Calcium, iron, antacids, sucralfate, bile-acid sequestrants and some foods can reduce absorption and usually require separation. Warfarin, diabetes medicines, seizure medicines, oestrogens and several other products may affect response. Provide a full medicine list.

Missed dose

Follow the patient leaflet or prescriber's instructions. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, do not take a double dose to compensate. Ask a pharmacist or prescriber if unsure.

Keep in the original light-resistant packaging, protected from heat, light and moisture, and out of children's reach. Observe the exact storage statement and expiry date on the supplied pack.
