Overview

Dytor 40 contains torasemide, a potent loop diuretic or 'water tablet'. It increases urinary removal of sodium and water. Clinicians use torasemide to reduce fluid retention associated with conditions such as heart failure, kidney disease or liver disease, and in some settings to help manage high blood pressure.

What it is used for

Management of oedema (fluid retention) and, where clinically appropriate, hypertension. The reason for treatment and dose depend on the underlying condition, kidney function, blood pressure, fluid status and laboratory results.

How it works

Torasemide blocks sodium and chloride reabsorption in the ascending loop of Henle in the kidney. More salt and water are excreted in urine, which can reduce swelling, lung congestion and circulatory workload.

How to take it

Take only as prescribed, usually at a time that minimises disruption from increased urination. Swallow with water, with or without food, and follow any advice about salt, fluids and daily weight. Never take extra tablets for sudden swelling without medical direction.

Common side effects

Increased urination, dizziness, headache, low blood pressure, thirst, muscle cramps, weakness, nausea and changes in sodium, potassium, magnesium, glucose, uric acid or kidney-function tests may occur.

When to seek urgent medical help

Seek help for fainting, confusion, extreme thirst, very low urine output, severe weakness or cramps, irregular heartbeat, hearing changes, gout symptoms, severe rash or swelling of the face or throat.

Warnings and precautions

Careful monitoring is needed with dehydration, low blood pressure, kidney or liver impairment, urinary obstruction, gout, diabetes or electrolyte disturbance. Blood pressure, kidney function, body weight and electrolytes may require regular checks.

Interactions

Potentially important interactions include lithium, digoxin, NSAID painkillers, other blood-pressure medicines, corticosteroids, aminoglycoside antibiotics and medicines that alter potassium. Alcohol can worsen dizziness or low blood pressure.

Missed dose

Follow the patient leaflet or prescriber's instructions. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, do not take a double dose to compensate. Ask a pharmacist or prescriber if unsure.

Storage

Store in the original pack at room temperature, protected from moisture and direct heat. Keep out of children's reach and use only before the printed expiry date.
