Levoflox 500 contains levofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic for selected susceptible bacterial infections. What it is used for
Depending on local guidance, culture results and patient factors, levofloxacin may be prescribed for selected infections involving the lungs, sinuses, urinary tract, prostate, skin or other sites. It does not treat viral infections.
How it works
Levofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes required for bacterial DNA replication, repair and cell division. This results in death of susceptible bacteria.
How to take it
Use exactly as prescribed and complete the directed course unless told to stop because of a serious reaction. Take with water and maintain adequate hydration if permitted. Tablets may be taken with or without food. Separate antacids, iron, zinc, magnesium, aluminium and sucralfate according to the leaflet, commonly by at least two hours.
Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, insomnia, abdominal discomfort and changes in taste may occur.
When to seek urgent medical help
Stop the medicine and seek medical advice immediately for tendon pain or swelling, a snap or inability to bear weight, burning or numbness, muscle weakness, severe anxiety or confusion, hallucinations, seizure, serious rash, allergic swelling, severe diarrhoea, fainting or an irregular heartbeat.
Warnings and precautions
Fluoroquinolones are associated with tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, central-nervous-system effects and worsening myasthenia gravis. Risk assessment is also important with kidney impairment, seizure disorders, QT prolongation, diabetes, aortic aneurysm risk, corticosteroid use, older age, pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Interactions
Relevant interactions include antacids and mineral supplements, warfarin, corticosteroids, diabetes medicines, NSAIDs and drugs that prolong the QT interval. Kidney function may require dose adjustment.
Missed dose
Follow the patient leaflet or prescriber's instructions. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, do not take a double dose to compensate. Ask a pharmacist or prescriber if unsure.
Storage
Store in the original packaging at room temperature, protected from excess moisture and heat, and out of children's reach.
